Pearl Harbor (My grandfather wasn’t there)

That guy? That’s my grandfather. He joined the US Navy in the early 1940’s.

That ship? That’s the USS Lexington. He was stationed on that ship in 1941.

She was one of a handful of ships that left Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 5, 1941. She was 580 miles away when they got the call on December 7th.

The call that said the US Navy fleet had been decimated.

All 8 battleships, sunk, damaged, or grounded.

3 out of 8 cruisers damaged.

3 destroyers damaged

And only 43, out of 380, aircraft remained undamaged.

3,649 military personnel killed or wounded, and between 50-70, or more civilians.

My Pawpaw wasn’t there. He was lucky.

A lot of others weren’t.
